About MixTape by Vesna Pavlović

MixTape by Vesna Pavlović is a series of photographs, exhibitions, public events and performances, and a cassette tape produced by Vesna Pavlović

MixTape explores the personal documentary photography archives by Vesna Pavlović taken in Serbia during the 1990s, and offers a comprehensive look into an a certain aesthetic of resistance at the time of the dissolution of Yugoslavia. The images capture the 1996 student protests, Pavlović’s early engagement with the art collective Škart and their radio and street performances, the work of peace pacifist group Women in Black, and various other non-for profit organizations such as Radio B92 and Center for Cultural Decontamination.

As one of the early photographers of the music magazine Ritam in Belgrade, Vesna Pavlović also created an archive of concert photographs which could be seen as a counter archive to her more institutional documentary work. For MixTape Project, she selected a number of songs by bands from the former Yugoslavia, with lyrics transcribed phonetically by Vlidi, and offered to a group of Nashville musicians to create a special mixtape produced by Loney John Hutchins. The music covers were released in September 2019. For her opening in Zeitgeist Gallery, Nashville, the bands performed the covers live, introduced by the talk by Vlidi. The performance was filmed and edited by Bill Badi. The limited edition cassette tape with the cover designed by Slavimir Stojanović Futro was released in December 2019. The project continued in Belgrade in 2019 and evolves further
